Momo to you, potsticker to Chinese, Gyoza to Japanese, Kachori to me/desis…why the ignorant fuss?

Reason I’m sharing this is I’m sick and tired of people talking about momo when it is just dumpling. And btw this article is wrong on 1 count: kachori are the desi version of dumpling not Samosa.

Point here that I’d like to make is some Nepalis keep making a fuss about how momo shouldn’t have an “s”, and desis are suddenly making a fuss over momo as if it’s a new foreign food when it is just kachori or potsticker steamed, whereas in our countries in the subcontinent we fry the things and we have 2 versions too: sweet called meetha Samosa (sweet samosa) and savoury “kachori” which is even more intricate than dumplings with all the folds and flakes similar to patties when preparing the dough.

Samosa is not a dumpling but it is just a Samosa. And samosas in our countries have again at least 2 versions the kaghzi samosas which you can also find in China and other Eastern countries because it is just too famous (the tiny samosas) and punjabi samosas which you find in Pakistan and certain parts of India, which is the large Samosa.

The filling is something we can play with, in dumplings and even samosas, and people can think this is what makes it momo, potsticker or kachori but at the same time you will find similar fillings everywhere too…the universal filling being veges or meat.

So yeah, even I get irritated when desis go “momo” raving about it when this same momo was heartily disliked until only recently because steamed dumplings were considered uncooked. And the truth is they still dislike it but they just have to rave about it as if it’s the bees knees. Like the recent artificial rave just to make it on social media as influences on sushi when they still don’t know that sushi isn’t even raw fish (thank you US for spreading that false news and making ignorance a global phenomenon). Sashimi is raw fish, sushi is Japanese gimpab, simply put, although everyone may suddenly claim it’s not the same. Of course it isn’t but it is the same family.

Just like how gyōza is Japanese dumpling. And here’s the funny thing: both the crescent shaped dumpling and the standard round bun like dumpling are made and found in the subcontinent in fried versions.

So call it whatever you may, but don’t try to create such silly misinformed raves: let the facts remain. Calling dumpling momo doesn’t make it another dish, it is still just dumpling Nepali style. If anything this should be just one of the gazillion things to remind us how we, the human race, expanded from one family tree and spread out to different ethnicities, races and cultures…at the end we are all from the same original family tree and it shows in our foods, our languages and  in certain universally common habits, traditions and values.
